What is The Last House about on Netflix?

The Last House follows a family of four who suddenly find themselves trapped inside their own home, with no way out and a mysterious threat lurking outside. As they struggle to survive with limited resources, their home slowly turns from a place of safety into a prison, forcing them to understand what is happening and find a way to survive. The film stars Greta Lee, Wagner Moura, Gabriel Barbosa, Emma Ho, Riley Chung, and Noah Alexander Sosnowski, has a runtime of around 1 hour and 52 minutes, and stretches across several years as the family remains trapped inside the house. Is it worth watching? Lets find out.

Is The Last House worth watching?

No, I think you can pass on this one. I do not usually tell anyone to skip a movie, but The Last House genuinely made me say it. The plot had the potential to be really good, especially because the basic survival setup is exactly the kind of story that can create tension, fear and emotional conflict. But somehow, the execution makes the film feel boring in places, the emotions do not register the way they should, and by the time it reaches the end, you are left with a very vague feeling rather than a strong connection to any of the characters.

What makes that even more frustrating is that the protagonists are played by genuinely good actors. Wagner Moura and Greta Lee are both capable performers, and they do put effort into their characters, but the direction, pacing and editing do not bring out the impact that their performances deserve. There are moments where you can clearly see what the film is trying to make you feel, but it moves through them so quickly or presents them so flatly that the emotion never really lands.

What is good in The Last House?

I love Wagner Moura, mostly because of Narcos, which I know is the obvious answer, and honestly, he was the main reason I turned this movie on in the first place. He is really good in The Last House too. He stays committed to his character and plays him like a very realistic, grounded father who believes his job is to provide for and protect his family no matter what. While the mother is more sensitive and sometimes struggles to explain the situation clearly to the children, his character is much more direct. He says what the situation is and deals with it as it comes.

That makes his character a little grey, but also much more impactful because he feels like a real person rather than a typical movie dad. His decisions may not always be the easiest to like, but you understand where they are coming from. So, if you only want to watch Wagner Moura in a survival thriller, I can at least give you that recommendation. The other actors do a good job too, but again, the editing and overall flow of the film make it difficult for their emotional performances to fully connect. There are also some really good visual and graphics-heavy moments that make certain scenes worth watching, even when the story itself is not working as well as it should.

What is bad in The Last House?

For me, the biggest problem is the writing and direction. Those are the two main components that have to hold a film like this together, and unfortunately, I do not think either one works well here. I mean no disrespect to the people who made the film, but I really cannot hold back while saying that I found it to be a bad film. There are good things scattered throughout it, but when the flow is not working properly, those moments do not have enough impact to make the overall experience satisfying.

A recent example that gave me a similar feeling is Toxic, an Indian film with a really good plot that, for me, struggled to connect because of the direction and the way it was cut together. The Last House‘s payoff feels cliché and predictable, and I expected much more from the ending because the setup gives you so many possibilities. Instead, it ends up feeling like there was still something missing from the survival horror that we were watching. Even War of the Worlds, which takes a slower approach, managed to create more tension and make its world feel more threatening to me.

What could have made The Last House better?

I think The Last House needed to make much more of its survival premise. Right now, it often feels like another flashy Netflix thriller where interesting ideas are introduced but not explored deeply enough. The family is trapped for more than five years, so that should have given the film plenty of room to show real scarcity, exhaustion, and desperation. Yes, the movie does show them growing food and finding ways to survive, but those details come and go so quickly that the struggle never really registers.

For example, the film could have made survival itself much more difficult. Instead of quickly establishing that they can grow food and hunt animals through the chimney, it could have shown how those methods slowly stop working. Their crops could fail, their food could run out, and the family could be forced to risk going outside because staying inside is no longer sustainable. That could have naturally led to them digging through parts of the house, exploring underground spaces or eventually venturing outside and encountering the creatures. Those encounters could then create a much stronger sense of danger and discovery.

I also think the family conflict could have been pushed much further. Jason and Ann already have different ways of dealing with the situation, so the film had a natural opportunity to turn that difference into a bigger emotional conflict as the years passed. And the biggest twist I would have liked is for the creature that appears to help them to turn out to have a completely different motive. That would have made the survival story feel less predictable and given the film a much stronger payoff. There was a lot this movie could have done with its premise, but for me, it never made that survival actually feel like survival for the full two hours.
